TROY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — A devastating early-morning fire tore through a home in Troy on Tuesday, leaving one man dead and a young woman critically injured, according to state and local officials.
Emergency crews were dispatched to a residence on Morse Street at approximately 1:45 a.m. Tuesday after a 911 caller reported a chimney fire that had spread to the porch. Just minutes later, a second call came in from inside the home, with the caller stating they were trapped as the fire rapidly intensified.
Firefighters from the Troy Fire Department arrived within minutes and encountered heavy flames engulfing the structure. Crews quickly entered the home and rescued two occupants, bringing them outside to begin lifesaving measures.
A 56-year-old man was transported to Cheshire Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. A 24-year-old woman was airlifted by Life Flight to Massachusetts General Hospital with severe injuries and remains in critical condition, officials said. Family pets also perished in the blaze.
New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey, Troy Fire Chief Mark Huntoon, and Troy Police Chief David Ellis Jr. confirmed the details in a news release.
Investigators from the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office are currently working to determine the cause and origin of the fire. An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to establish the exact cause and manner of the man’s death.
Authorities noted that, while the investigation is still in its early stages, the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
Multiple fire departments from surrounding communities, including Fitzwilliam, Jaffrey, Marlborough, Keene, Ashby, Winchester, Dublin, Surry, Rindge, Spofford, and Richmond, responded to assist. Additional support came from Troy police, Cheshire County EMS, and the Troy Water Department. No first responders were injured.
Officials are asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The investigation remains ongoing.
