The Keene SwampBats scored the winning run in unorthodox fashion to beat the Ocean State Waves 4-3 on Tuesday.

The SwampBats jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first, courtesy of back-to-back doubles by Alex Alicea (Louisville) and last week’s NECBL player of the week Joe Jaconski (Penn State). Ocean State tied the game with a two-out single in the top of the second, but the tie was short lived. Brett House (Mississippi State) knocked a home run into the parking lot past left-center field to make it 2-1 SwampBats. The Waves responded in the next half with a two-run single to go ahead 3-2. Keene starter Jacob Bean (Kent State) finished with three runs allowed and two strikeouts over three and two-thirds innings.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, House drew ball four to tie the game. As the ball skipped away from the Ocean State catcher, Andrew Wiggins (Indiana) hustled all the way home from second base to give the SwampBats a 4-3 lead. Jaden Varner (Kent State) escaped a bases-loaded jam to get the last out of the fourth, then pitched two more innings of scoreless relief, striking out four and exiting with a lead after six innings.

Isaac Williams (Jacksonville) struck out five and allowed one baserunner over three scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season.

Keene (4-1) is back at home Wednesday at 6:35 against the Sanford Mainers.
