GILSUM, N.H. – (MyKeeneNow)
A 15-year-old girl suffered serious injuries in an ATV accident in Gilsum on Monday evening.
The incident occurred at around 7:45 p.m. when the N.H. Hampshire Fish and Game department was alerted to a single ATV rollover on private property.
Responders from the Gilsum Fire Department, Keene Fire Department, and Cheshire EMS, along with a conservation officer, arrived at the scene. The investigation revealed that the young operator had collided with a tree along a trail. In an attempt to reverse away from the tree, she inadvertently veered off the trail, causing the ATV to tumble down a steep embankment and overturn onto her.
Despite being alone at the time, the teenager managed to contact a friend via cell phone, who then alerted N.H. State Police and 9-1-1.
She was not wearing a helmet or eye protection during the crash. It was also reported that her guardians were unaware she had taken the ATV out that evening.
The injured girl was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Preliminary findings suggest that lack of experience played a major role in the accident.
The investigation is ongoing.
