KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Drivers traveling through Keene this week should be prepared for temporary lane closures, detours, and construction-related delays as several municipal infrastructure projects get underway or continue across the city.
City officials announced that work will be taking place at multiple locations beginning Tuesday, May 26, with projects ranging from road resurfacing and sidewalk construction to parking garage repairs and sewer infrastructure improvements.
One of the largest impacts will be on Marlboro Street, where contractor Bazin Brothers is continuing roadway resurfacing work. Milling operations are scheduled to begin Tuesday morning between Baker Street and Eastern Avenue, followed by pavement preparation later in the week. Traffic through active construction areas will be reduced to alternating one-way travel while crews are on site. The project is expected to wrap up by Friday, May 29, with normal traffic patterns restored at the end of each workday.
Nearby, work on Island Street will require a temporary closure at its intersection with Winchester Street. Contractor SUR West is scheduled to begin sidewalk repairs and roadway preparation Tuesday ahead of paving work planned for later this week. Traffic will be detoured via Pearl Street, while alternating one-way traffic will be used near active work zones. Officials expect the project to continue for approximately two weeks.
At the City Hall parking garage, contractor Structural Preservation Systems will continue demolition and concrete rehabilitation work throughout the week. The garage improvement project is expected to remain active for roughly another month.
Construction activity is also increasing on Willow Street, where BC Construction will begin excavation work Tuesday in advance of installing a new sidewalk. Alternating one-way traffic will be in place in the construction zone during working hours. The sidewalk project is expected to take about four weeks to complete.
On Green Acres Road, crews from L&M Landscaping are scheduled to repair a sewer lateral near 34 Green Acres Road beginning Tuesday morning. Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic in the immediate work area for approximately three days.
Additional sidewalk improvements are planned to start Wednesday on Bartholomew Court and along the Cheshire Rail Trail connector leading to Marlboro Street. Bazin Brothers will install new concrete sidewalks at both locations, with alternating one-way traffic maintained while work is underway. The project is expected to continue for about two weeks.
Landscaping improvements are also planned at the traffic circle near Cheshire Medical Center on Court Street. Faulkner Landscaping is scheduled to begin work Friday on the center island of the roundabout. City officials said the project is not expected to significantly affect traffic flow and should be completed within a week.
Meanwhile, motorists using George Street will see a temporary break from construction activity. No work is scheduled on the George Street Bridge replacement project during the week of May 25, and the roadway will remain fully open to traffic.
City officials are encouraging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to use caution around active work zones, follow posted traffic controls, and allow extra travel time while crews complete the various improvement projects.
