PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) State investigators have identified the man who was fatally shot during a violent confrontation between neighbors in Peterborough Sunday evening, while continuing to investigate whether the shooting was legally justified.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office announced Monday that the victim was 24-year-old Jack Hutchings of Peterborough.

According to investigators, the incident unfolded at about 8 p.m. Sunday outside neighboring homes on Grove Street, where two adult men became involved in an altercation.

When officers arrived, they found Hutchings dead with apparent gunshot wounds. The second man, identified only as an off-duty Peterborough police officer, had suffered what authorities described as apparent stab or incised wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he remained Monday.

Officials said Monday that investigators are examining all aspects of the case, including whether the individual who shot Hutchings acted in self-defense.

An autopsy on Hutchings was completed Monday by the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Authorities said the official cause and manner of death will be released after next of kin notifications have been completed.

Police were initially called to the Grove Street neighborhood Sunday night for a reported disturbance. At the time, investigators said there was no known threat to the public.

The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit. Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available without compromising the ongoing investigation.
