KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Keene’s annual water main flushing program is set to begin Sunday night, with Public Works crews working overnight for the next several weeks to clean and maintain the city’s water system.

The work starts at 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, and is expected to continue for approximately three to four weeks. Crews will generally work between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in an effort to limit disruptions, including temporary water discoloration and traffic impacts.

The flushing removes mineral deposits that accumulate inside water mains. The program also gives Public Works an opportunity to operate and test water valves and fire hydrants, helping ensure the equipment remains functional during emergencies such as fires and water main breaks.

A tentative schedule for the first week of work is expected to be released Friday.

Residents may notice discolored water while flushing is underway. Public Works recommends closing all but one faucet in the home and running cold water for about 10 minutes until it clears.

If the water remains discolored, residents should shut off the faucet, wait 30 minutes and repeat the process.

Anyone who experiences laundry staining is advised not to put the clothing in the dryer. Public Works can be reached at 603-352-6550 and will provide a product intended to remove the stains.
