KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Officials of The Clarence DeMar Marathon, a staple event in Keene, NH, has introduced a new way to recognize those who have significantly contributed to its success. This year, the inaugural “DeMar Champions” award was presented to John and Jean Hoffman, along with the Savings Bank of Walpole (SBW), for their exceptional dedication to the marathon and the local community.
The award was created to honor individuals and organizations that go beyond traditional volunteering to make a lasting impact on the race and its mission of promoting health and wellness. The 2024 recipients exemplify this commitment.
In their 90s, John and Jean Hoffman have been instrumental in the creation and growth of the Super Seniors program, which encourages older adults to remain physically active. Under their leadership, the program has become a year-round initiative that promotes exercise and social connection for those aged 70 and above. The Hoffmans, who continue to live active lives themselves, have inspired their peers to prioritize health and well-being. Their family foundation has also been a generous supporter of the Super Seniors program, amplifying its reach and impact within the Clarence DeMar Marathon.
The Savings Bank of Walpole has been a key supporter of the marathon for more than a decade, not just through financial contributions but also through the hands-on efforts of its employees. Each year, the bank sends 30 to 40 volunteers to assist during the race, performing roles such as course marshals, manning water stations, and helping with finish-line activities. SBW’s involvement has helped solidify the marathon’s place as a flagship event in Keene, enhancing the experience for participants and boosting the overall success of the race.
The “DeMar Champions” award will be given annually to one individual and one business or organization that has made a significant and lasting impact on the marathon. Recipients are recognized for their long-term contributions to the event and their commitment to promoting health and wellness. Awardees receive a commemorative trophy and plaque to honor their achievements.
