BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) Fire crews extinguished a machine room fire Monday night at the Fulflex manufacturing facility on Justin Holden Drive, preventing significant damage despite frigid temperatures.

The Brattleboro Fire Department was dispatched at 8:45 p.m. after a fire alarm activated at the industrial plant, which produces rubber and thermoplastic materials, according to a news release. Responding crews encountered moderate smoke inside the building and quickly identified the fire in the machine room, with potential for spread into the exhaust system, according to Captain Casabona.

A second alarm was issued to bring additional resources, the release said. Firefighters deployed two hose lines to attack the flames directly while a third team worked on the roof to check for fire extension. The fire was brought under control by 9:29 p.m.

Operations were complicated by single-digit temperatures, which slowed equipment maintenance and required mutual aid crews to remain on scene longer than usual. Teams from Keene and Guilford, VT, assisted at the site, while fire departments from Chesterfield, Dummerston, VT, and Hinsdale, along with Cheshire EMS, provided coverage for Brattleboro’s fire stations.

No injuries were reported. Officials determined the fire was caused by an equipment malfunction and classified it as accidental.

A representative of the company said while the machinery is still being assessed, the building was not damaged in the fire.
