HINSDALE, N.H./BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) As traffic has been flowing across the General John Stark Memorial Bridge, attention is now turning to the fate of the two historic truss bridges it replaces.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) has scheduled a public meeting to discuss rehabilitation plans for the aging spans, which connected Hinsdale and Brattleboro for a century. The meeting will take place on Monday, March 3, at 6 p.m. at Hinsdale Town Hall, with Brattleboro officials expected to attend.

Officials say the session will provide an opportunity for residents to learn about the project and offer input on how the bridges, no longer suitable for vehicle traffic, should be repurposed. The process is still in its early stages, and public feedback will help shape the final design.

The discussion comes just as the new bridge—a project nearly three decades in the making—opened ahead of schedule Dec. 4.

The bridge replaces the aging truss spans and establishes a safer, more direct connection between the two states.

The old bridges will remain closed until spring, when rehabilitation efforts begin in earnest.

For those invested in the future of the historic structures, Monday’s meeting offers a chance to weigh in on their transformation.
