SWANZEY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) More than five decades after it first challenged audiences with its powerful music and thought-provoking story, “Jesus Christ Superstar” is coming to the Monadnock Region in a production that organizers say is about much more than theater.

The Keene Lions Club will present Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s groundbreaking rock opera July 9, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Monadnock Regional High School in Swanzey. Produced entirely through the efforts of local volunteers, the musical showcases a cast, orchestra and production team drawn from across the community while continuing the Lions Club’s long tradition of using the performing arts to support charitable work throughout the region.

Originally released as a concept album in 1970 before becoming a Broadway sensation, “Jesus Christ Superstar” has since been performed in more than 20 countries and translated into 18 languages. Its enduring popularity, according to director and music director Deanna Zilske, comes from its ability to spark conversation as much as entertain.

Rather than offering simple answers, the musical invites audiences to explore themes of humanity, compassion, power, community and sacrifice through the perspectives of Jesus, Judas and Mary Magdalene. Zilske said the production encourages viewers to reflect on difficult questions, connect with the emotions of the characters and find common ground through shared experiences.

Behind the scenes, dozens of volunteers have spent months bringing the production to life. The creative team includes producer Gregg Kleiner, choreographer Kristen Leach, vocal coach JoAnne Mead, creative consultant Barbara Andrews, orchestra director Steve and designers Alex and Jeremy, along with a large cast and backstage crew.

“For me, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is the perfect example of what happens when service and the arts come together,” Kleiner said. “Incredible volunteers, talented performers, dedicated crew members, generous sponsors, and an amazing audience all play a part in creating something that not only entertains but gives back to the Monadnock Region. That’s something I’m incredibly proud to be part of.”

Cast member Sonia Kibbee said the production has been a memorable experience because of the commitment shown by everyone involved.

“I’ve been honored to be a part of this cast,” Kibbee said. “Everyone involved has worked countless hours and worked incredibly hard to deliver a powerful, emotional performance—from the director, choreographer, music director, producer, orchestra, and crew to every single performer. It’s a first for our community and it’s a show you won’t want to miss.”

Zilske also praised the Keene Lions Club for making productions like this possible, noting that the organization creates opportunities for local artists to collaborate while raising funds that benefit the wider community.

“This show happens because people work together toward a greater good,” she said. “We are fortunate to have an organization like the Keene Lions Club that brings people together to create art while giving so much back to the community.”

The Keene Lions Club will present “Jesus Christ Superstar” Friday, July 9, Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Monadnock Regional High School, 580 Old Homestead Hwy, Swanzey.
