KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The Keene Senior Center is getting a new name, but Executive Director Kim Rumrill says the organization’s purpose will remain the same.

Beginning with a grand reveal Friday, the organization will rebrand as Hub 50 Plus, a name Rumrill says better reflects the active, social and community-focused programs available to adults age 50 and older.

“We’re changing our name, but we’re not changing our mission,” Rumrill said during an interview Monday on WKBK’s Good Morning with Dan Mitchell.

Rumrill said the new name is intended to emphasize the organization as a community hub where adults can find resources, fitness opportunities, education, travel, social activities and connections with others.

The organization has operated under several names over the years, including the Golden Age Club and Keene Senior Center. Rumrill said the latest change is also meant to move away from some of the negative associations people may have with the word “senior.”

The Hub 50 Plus grand reveal is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the center on Marlboro Street. The event will include a PowerPoint presentation explaining the rebrand along with appetizers.

People who sign up for membership during the event will receive a 10% discount.

“We want it to be something where everybody can go and feel welcome,” Rumrill said.

Programs For a Wide Range of Interests

The center’s existing slate of programs will continue under the Hub 50 Plus name.

Fitness and recreation activities include pickleball, bowling, walking groups, the 100 Mile Club, the Damar Marathon group, cornhole, yoga, chair yoga, dance and guided meditation.

There are also numerous social and creative activities, including Mahjong, card games, knitting, crocheting, art and the Keen Senior Singers. Regular programming includes Thursday trivia lunches, hot lunches and other opportunities for members to gather.

The center also operates a thrift shop and organizes trips and special events throughout the year.

The next major outing is a Sept. 22 trip to the Boston area. The $160 trip includes lunch, a duck tour and free time near Faneuil Hall. Tickets are available to both members and nonmembers.

Other upcoming activities include a fabric sale Oct. 8-10, a November pie social and a monthly blood-pressure clinic.

Keeping Membership Accessible

Annual membership is $120 and includes access to classes.

Rumrill said the organization also works to make membership accessible to people who might have difficulty affording it. Scholarships are available for people with annual incomes below $50,000, while those earning less than $2,600 per month may qualify for free membership through a Keene Rotary Club scholarship.

The center also partners with Cheshire Village at Home, which provides qualifying members with a free year of Hub 50 Plus membership. The program connects participants with volunteers who can help with transportation, grocery shopping and light household tasks.

Other community partnerships include the Keene YMCA, American House and Langdon Place of Keene.

While the rebrand is rolled out, the center’s existing website and email address will remain available. Information is currently available at KeeneSeniorCenter.org, and the organization can still be reached at director@theKeeneSeniorCenter.org.

Rumrill said the new name reflects how the organization sees its role in the community: a place where people 50 and older can stay active, meet others, learn new things and find support.
