SWANZEY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A 42-year-old man died Sunday afternoon after an apparent drowning at Wilson Pond in Swanzey, prompting an investigation by New Hampshire Marine Patrol.
Authorities said emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports that a swimmer had gone missing in the water.
Investigators identified the victim as Fredy Gavilanes Jami of Ecuador. According to preliminary findings, Gavilanes Jami had been swimming near the shore with three companions when he entered a section of the pond where the water depth drops off sharply. Officials said he disappeared beneath the surface without the others immediately noticing.
When his friends realized he was no longer visible, they began searching for him and called for assistance. Witnesses nearby contacted 911 and attempted to help before first responders arrived.
A Swanzey police officer who was first on scene entered the pond and located Gavilanes Jami in the water. He was brought to shore, where emergency personnel performed lifesaving efforts before he was transported to Cheshire Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead.
State officials said there is currently no indication of foul play. Marine Patrol officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Responding agencies included the Swanzey Police Department, Swanzey Fire Department, Keene Fire Rescue, Cheshire County EMS, New Hampshire Fish and Game, Marine Patrol and New Hampshire State Police Troop C.
