MONADNOCK REGION, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Communities across New Hampshire, including several in the Monadnock Region, will take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, April 25, offering residents a safe and convenient way to dispose of unwanted medications.
The biannual event, organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at thousands of collection sites nationwide, including local police departments and community locations.
The initiative is designed to reduce prescription drug misuse, prevent accidental poisonings, and limit environmental damage caused by improper disposal. Officials say removing unused medications from homes is a simple but effective way to improve public safety.
Local collection sites participating in the event include:
- Keene Police Department, 400 Marlboro St., Keene
- Walpole Police Department (Recycle Center), 207 Whitcomb Rd., Walpole
- Dublin Police Department, 1122 Main St., Dublin
- Walpole Police Department, 4 Russell St., North Walpole
- Jaffrey Police Department, 26 Main St., Jaffrey
- Antrim Police Department, 61 Main St., Antrim
- Hinsdale Police Department, 10 Main St., Hinsdale
- Peterborough Police Department, 73 Grove St., Peterborough
- Rindge Police Department, 158 Main St., Rindge
Residents can drop off most prescription and over-the-counter medications, including tablets, capsules, liquids in sealed containers, patches, and inhalers. Items such as syringes, sharps, illicit drugs, and certain types of medical waste will not be accepted. Officials recommend removing or covering any personal information on prescription labels before drop-off.
Those unable to attend Saturday’s event still have options. More than 16,000 pharmacies, hospitals, and law enforcement agencies nationwide offer year-round drug disposal, with many local police departments maintaining permanent drop boxes.
Since the program began, Take Back Day events have collected more than 20 million pounds of medications nationwide, according to the DEA.
