HINSDALE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – First responders are dealing with a second potentially hazardous incident in Hinsdale within one week.
Late this morning the Hinsdale Police Department said that Route 63 South (Northfield Road) in the area of #692 will be closed for an undetermined amount of time for a large oil spill in the roadway.
Very few details are available at this point as crews work to clear the scene, but police said that a 250-gallon container of oil on the back of a truck spilled, and witnesses report it appears that some of the oil has spilled into a stream near the roadway.
The road was closed by 10:45 Wednesday morning in the area of the Ashuelot Rail Trail and police have not provided any updates since. Drivers should avoid the area until police give the all clear.
In an update Wednesday evening police said that the roadway remains closed except for residential traffic. Those who do drive through the area are urged to use extreme caution as the roadway remains slippery, and will only get worse if it rains. Motorcyclists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
Haz-mat trained members of the Keene Fire Department responded to assist in the cleanup with their haz-mat equipment.
Last Thursday a truck carrying asbestos-contaminated waste from a nearby demolition site rolled over, spilling the contents. The incident happened as the truck attempted to turn into a driveway along Canal Street and its rear tires slipped off the edge of Hog Tongue Brook, causing it to overturn. No injuries were reported in that incident, and none of the asbestos-contaminated material entered the water.
