KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The City Council’s Municipal Services, Facilities and Infrastructure Committee will meet tonight at 6 p.m. with a focused agenda that centers on pedestrian safety and community visibility enhancements.
Among the most pressing topics is a renewed push from property owners at 82 Court Street, who are calling for parking restrictions and safety improvements following a three-car accident last month. Stephen Bragdon and Cheryl Belair, who co-own the property, argue that poor visibility due to on-street parking has created dangerous conditions for drivers exiting their driveway—especially given the building’s location at the bottom of a hill. In a letter to city officials, they emphasize the daily risks faced by clients and staff, citing at least one prior incident and appealing for a 30-foot no-parking buffer to the north of their driveway.
Also on the agenda, resident Ian D. Matheson will speak to pedestrian safety concerns along Court Street between Central Square and Mechanic Street. In a letter to Mayor Jay Kahn and councilors, Matheson described frequent near-misses and inadequate signage at crosswalks. He is advocating for enhanced visibility measures, such as pedestrian beacons or traffic calming infrastructure, and urges the city to look beyond rigid traffic control guidelines to consider community-level risk.
The committee will also revisit a proposal to install infrastructure to support promotional banners across Main Street, an initiative introduced by local business owners Tim Pipp of Beeze Tee’s and Ted McGreer of Ted’s Shoe and Sport. The plan is designed to enhance downtown visibility for events, improve community engagement, and support local businesses. While the idea received favorable comments during its initial discussion, the committee had voted earlier this month to place the item on more time, asking city staff to provide additional information.
Tonight’s meeting will not be followed by a Finance Committee session tomorrow, which has been canceled.
