KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) On Sunday, May 18, Keene’s Dillant-Hopkins Airport will swap planes for sneakers as runners and walkers take over the runway for a unique 5K race. For the second year in a row, the Keene Runway 5K will transform the airport’s typically busy taxiways into a fast and flat racecourse — a novelty that’s attracting attention across the region.

The event, which kicks off at 9 a.m., is a fundraiser for the Keene Senior Center and is timed by Tri-State Racing Services. Organizers are expecting a wide range of participants, from casual walkers to competitive runners chasing personal bests.

“This isn’t just another 5K — it’s a race with wings,” said Kim Rumrill, Executive Director of the Keene Senior Center. “How often do you get the chance to run on an actual airport runway?”

This year’s event features 26 prize categories for men and women, plus a slate of random prize drawings open to all participants. Among the more exciting giveaways: two complimentary flying lessons, courtesy of Monadnock Aviation.

For those interested in registering, the $35 entry fee jumps to $40 after May 11. Participants who sign up by May 5 will also receive a race T-shirt. The event has earned the endorsement of the New England 65 Plus Runners Club, which promotes races that are accessible and engaging for older athletes.

After the race, the airport will open to the public for a family-friendly open house, featuring food trucks, airplane displays, and activities for all ages. Airport Director David Hickling is encouraging pilots to fly in and join the festivities.

The Keene Senior Center, which offers a wide range of services for local seniors, will receive all proceeds from the race. The center’s development committee is still accepting sponsorships to support the event and its broader mission.
