SWANZEY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A woman was hospitalized and four pets were lost after a fierce early-morning fire tore through a home in the Pine Grove mobile home park Friday, according to local fire officials.

Firefighters were called to 120 Lat Lane shortly after 3 a.m., arriving to find the single-wide home engulfed in flames amid subzero temperatures. The resident, Jessica Rice, who was inside when the fire broke out, managed to escape but suffered smoke inhalation. She was evaluated at the scene before being taken to Cheshire Medical Center for additional care, authorities said.

Despite the efforts of firefighters, a dog and three cats died in the blaze.

Departments from across the Monadnock Region — including crews from Winchester, Keene, Richmond, Jaffrey, Hinsdale, Spofford, Surry, Troy, Walpole and Dublin — responded to the second-alarm call. Firefighters worked for roughly three hours to knock down the flames while battling brutal cold, with temperatures in Swanzey dropping to -1 degree.

The home was declared a total loss. A nearby residence sustained minor siding damage, but firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading further. The homeowner is staying with relatives, according to officials.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe page, “Coming Together for Jess After the Fire,” has been created to help the resident recover from the loss.
