JAFFREY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Three young hikers from Massachusetts were assisted off Mount Monadnock late Friday night after becoming stranded in deteriorating conditions without proper gear, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

Authorities say the group contacted emergency dispatchers around 8:20 p.m. on April 10, reporting they were unable to continue along the Red Spot Trail. Officials noted the hikers were not equipped for the colder temperatures at higher elevations, lacked appropriate footwear for snow and ice, and did not have lights as darkness set in. Because they are minors, their names were not released.

Two conservation officers hiked up the mountain and reached the group around 10:10 p.m. near the Old Ski Path Trail. After providing necessary equipment, the officers escorted the hikers safely down to the Monadnock State Park headquarters on Poole Road, arriving shortly after 11 p.m.

Fish and Game officials are reminding the public that winter conditions can persist on mountain summits well into spring, even as temperatures rise at lower elevations. Hikers are urged to plan accordingly, carry essential gear, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
