KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Authorities are investigating after what appear to be human skeletal remains were discovered Friday in the area of the American Legion on Court Street.

According to a news release issued Monday by the Keene Police Department, officers responded to a report of remains in the Upper Court Street area on April 17. Detectives recovered the remains, which have since been secured and turned over to the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further examination and possible identification.

Police first alerted the public to activity in the area Friday afternoon, noting an increased presence of officers but emphasizing there was no threat to public safety.

Details about the case remain limited. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and declined to release additional information at this time.

Earlier Monday, police had not commented publicly on the situation.
