KEENE, NH – The City of Keene has released a video update explaining the upcoming Downtown Reconstruction Project.
The video explains the need for the project, which is to upgrade and replace the infrastructure underground. Discussions on that part of the project began several years ago and Mayor George Hansel has previously said that it has reached the point that it can no longer be put off and needs to be done now.
According to the video, 75% of the cost of the project will go towards the work underground, but the project does present a “unique opportunity” to make some cosmetic changes to the downtown, namely Central Square.
An Ad Hoc committee has made a recommendation that will do away with parking at the head of the square and extend green space in the square and add a walking area, a bike lane, and additional parking around the side of the square instead. This plan is facing backlash in the community and has prompted a “Save the Square” movement on social media.
The city has planned two public workshops to allow the community to learn more about the project and make comments. The first is set for January 30th at the Keene Public Library at 5 pm, the second on February 21st at the Keene High School at 6 pm.
A link to the video is available here. Hansel recently discussed the project with WKBK, that interview is available here. More information about the project as a whole is available here.
