UPDATE Friday 10-21-2022 9:45 P.M.

KEENE, NH – Crews are still on scene battling a structure fire at a multifamily dwelling after a plane reportedly crashed into a barn attached to the building.

The City of Keene has reported that those onboard the plane have died.

Wayne Brown is the owner of the building, and said he began receiving panicked phone calls from his tenants.

“One of my tenants called me in hysteria,” he told WKBK on scene. “I immediately left home and got down here as fast as I could.”

He said it appeared the pilot must have had some trouble with the plane as he missed the runway at the Keene Airport by about half a mile.

“They clipped a tree out back and it turned the plane on a 90-degree angle and stuffed it right through the barn roof.”

Brown confirmed he saw the plane in the barn. He said all of his tenants are accounted for and uninjured. He also noted that the building was erected around 1830 and was one of the original farmhouses on Main Street in Keene.

Scott Gauthier is a resident in one of those apartments in the back of the building and was home when the crash occurred.

“I heard a sound like something was falling and then the whole building shook,” Gauthier said. “My mom went and checked outside the building and started screaming ‘get out of the house, get out of the house’ …And I looked up and the whole roof of the barn was on fire within minutes.”

Those who heard the crash initially reported it as sounding like an explosion, but Gauthier said it sounded more like a loud bang.

The scene remains active at this point and Route 12 is closed between Route 101 and Route 32, and likely will be for several hours.

First responders are currently on scene of a structure fire on Route 12 in Keene.

Fire Mutual Aid first received a report around 6:50 Friday evening of a plane crash. It hasn’t been confirmed if the crash is connected to the blaze but Keene Police Lt. Steven Tenney, who is on scene, spoke to WKBK’s Dan Mitchell and said they are investigating the cause and possible connection. He said it was initially reported as an explosion.

“When services arrived, they found a building on fire here on Lower Main Street and the fire department began fire operations which they are currently doing,” Tenny said in an interview on scene. “At this point they’re trying to confirm what the source of the fire was, whether it was indeed a plane or some sort of incident inside the building.”

Tenney didn’t have any information on injuries at that point.

Lower Main Street is closed from Route 101 to Route 32, and Tenney said it will likely remain closed for a few hours.
