WINCHESTER, N.H. – (MyKeeneNow) A man caused alarm in his neighborhood and prompted a lockdown of Thayer Public Library and the town post office late Thursday afternoon when he fired rock salt from a cannon, according to Police Chief David Rice.

Around 4 p.m., Winchester police received multiple reports of a man shootingfrom the front porch of a residence on Fenton Hill Road. Responding officers, including Chief Rice, arrived at the scene and witnessed the man emerge from behind what turned out to be a piece of furniture, aim what seemed to be a rifle into the woods, and fire before retreating back into his home.

New Hampshire Police, N.H. Fish and Game, and officers from Hinsdale and Northfield, Mass. assisted. Authorities locked down nearby areas and diverted school buses as a precaution.

Further investigation revealed that the man was using a small cannon to fire rock salt, according to Chief Rice. No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.

The entire incident was resolved in about half an hour.
