KEENE, NH – This past Saturday was the one-year anniversary of the landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision that overturned Roe V. Wade.

New Hampshire’s Democratic delegation: Senator’s Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan and Representatives Annie Kuster and Chris Pappas issued a joint statement Saturday condemning the decision one year later.

“From state legislators to the 2024 GOP presidential hopefuls flocking to court New Hampshire voters, Republicans at every level of government have spent the past year pushing to criminalize abortion, punish doctors, and undermine the right to privacy — all while women and families suffer,” the statement says. “These attacks on abortion access are dangerous and fundamentally at odds with the freedom we cherish here in the pro-choice state of New Hampshire.”

According to a news release from her office, Shaheen is joining her colleagues on the left to reintroduce the Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act. The legislation would block anti-choice states from limiting travel for abortion services and empower the Attorney General and impacted individuals to bring civil action against those who restrict a woman’s right to cross state lines to receive legal reproductive care.

The Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act is crucial to protecting women’s fundamental rights, health and safety,” Shaheen said. “I’ll continue fighting against the GOP’s extreme laws to ensure women don’t have to fear repercussions when making these important, personal – and at times lifesaving or life-changing— health care decisions.”

Executive Councilor turned Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Cinde Warmington reflected on the ruling, saying it “set reproductive freedom back over half a century,” and said Republican’s in New Hampshire have defunded reproductive health care providers across the state, including Planned Parenthood.

“Despite the fact that 71% of Granite Staters support abortion rights, Governor Chris Sununu has refused calls to protect abortion access in our state law,” Warmington said.

Democratic lawmakers gathered outside the statehouse Friday to urge Sununu to defend abortion rights in New Hampshire.

Sununu signed a budget trailer bill in 2021 that contained a provision that bans most abortions in New Hampshire after 24 weeks. The law does include certain exceptions to protect for the woman, and for fetuses with fatal defects.
