KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Organizers of the Monadnock 250 celebration have unveiled a fuller lineup of entertainment, historical programming, and family-friendly activities planned for Independence Day in downtown Keene as the region prepares to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary.

The July 4 festivities will begin with an 11 a.m. parade traveling down Main Street from the historic Wyman Tavern to Railroad Square. Organizers said the parade registration deadline is June 4.

Following the parade, free public events will take place throughout downtown Keene and at several sites operated by the Historical Society of Cheshire County.

Newly announced performances at Railroad Square include patriotic music by The Monadnock Blend acapella quartet at noon, followed by a community sing-along led by Keene Middle School choral director Jenn Garretson. The Keene Main Street Four will lead “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and members of the Keene High School Mayor’s Youth Council will read the Declaration of Independence.

Additional musical performances include the Nelson Town Band at 1 p.m. and the Keene Jazz Orchestra from 2 to 3 p.m.

Families will also be able to attend a free screening of the movie The Sandlot at The Colonial Theatre beginning at 1 p.m., with doors opening at 12:30 p.m.

Other attractions planned downtown include the Enchanted Animals Petting Zoo at the former Domino’s Pizza site on the corner of Main and Davis streets, along with live entertainment by Doug the Devil-Stick Man and Gavin Key and the Get Down near City Tire.

At the Historical Society’s properties — including the Bruder House and Wyman Tavern — visitors will be able to experience Revolutionary War-era demonstrations, crafts, music, historical reenactors, and tours from noon until 3 p.m.

Earlier this spring, Keene City Councilor Molly Ellis said the Monadnock 250 celebration is intended to be a regional event involving communities throughout the Monadnock Region. During a March appearance on WKBK’s Good Morning with Dan Mitchell, Ellis said organizers were seeking parade participants, volunteers, performers, and sponsors for the event.

“This is really a regional celebration,” Ellis said at the time, noting that local historical societies, libraries, and civic organizations from across the region are expected to participate.

The celebration will also include July 3 festivities at Alumni Field during a Keene SwampBats game beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Additional information, including event maps and parade details, is available through the Monadnock 250 organization.
