JAFFREY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A young Massachusetts man died Saturday afternoon after experiencing a medical emergency while hiking on Mount Monadnock, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials.

Emergency responders were alerted shortly after 4 p.m. when reports came in of a hiker in distress on the Cascade Link Trail in Jaffrey. The hiker was later identified as Joshua Luth, 20, of Lancaster, Massachusetts.

Officials said Luth had been hiking alone when other hikers encountered him approximately three-quarters of a mile from the Monadnock State Park headquarters on Poole Road. As his condition worsened, bystanders called 911 and began performing CPR while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.

Conservation officers, state park staff and firefighters from several local departments responded to the scene. Despite lifesaving efforts by both hikers and first responders, Luth was pronounced dead at the location.

Authorities said Luth appeared to be properly equipped for the hike. The exact cause of the medical emergency has not been determined.

The incident remains under investigation by the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Agencies assisting at the scene included New Hampshire Fish and Game, Monadnock State Park, and the fire departments from Jaffrey, Rindge, Peterborough and Keene.
