KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Keene will become the gathering place for a day of games, demonstrations and family activities Sunday as the community comes together to recognize the police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel who serve Cheshire County.

First Responder Appreciation Day is scheduled for Aug. 16 at Alumni Field at Keene High School, 77 Arch St. The free event, organized by Blue Line Appreciation and founded by Jimmy Tempesta and Jim Coppo, will open to the public at 10 a.m.

The celebration is being held in honor of Cheshire County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Mark Chamberlain. Organizers say the event is intended to give residents an opportunity to thank first responders while also offering families a chance to see some of the equipment and skills used by local emergency personnel.

The day’s activities begin with a car show and touch-a-truck event at 11 a.m., followed by the national anthem and first pitch at 11:15 a.m. A County Police vs. County Fire softball game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

A helicopter and mock car crash demonstration will take place at 12:30 p.m., followed by a home-run derby at 1 p.m. K-9 and motorcycle demonstrations are scheduled for 1:40 p.m.

The afternoon will conclude with a Keene Police vs. Keene Fire softball game at 2:30 p.m.

Additional attractions throughout the day will include the Fitzwilliam Police Car Show, EMS, police and fire demonstrations, a DHART helicopter landing, a K-9 demonstration, face painting and a dunk tank.

Food will be available from Tempesta Food Fare and Winnie’s Wagon.

Tempesta said the event is intended as a way for the community to recognize the work first responders do, particularly during difficult moments for residents.

Cheshire County Administrator Christopher Coates also encouraged residents to take part, describing the event as an opportunity for families to come together while showing their appreciation for local emergency personnel.

Organizers are encouraging attendees to arrive early, bring lawn chairs and plan to spend the day at Alumni Field.
