JAFFREY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A Pennsylvania man was flown to a Manchester hospital Friday after experiencing a potentially life-threatening medical emergency while hiking Mount Monadnock.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers were alerted around 1:20 p.m. Aug. 14 after State Police dispatch received a 911 call reporting a hiker in distress near the upper junction of the White Dot and White Cross trails.

Department of Natural and Cultural Resources park staff, members of the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team and Fish and Game Conservation Officers responded to the scene. A DNCR park ranger who was already near the hiker was able to reach him shortly after the emergency call and assist with stabilizing him.

The hiker was identified as 49-year-old Thomas LaValley of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Officials said LaValley had prior hiking experience and was properly prepared for the outing.

Because of the severity of the medical emergency and the difficult mountain terrain, Fish and Game requested assistance from the New Hampshire Army National Guard.

A Black Hawk helicopter crew assembled and flew to Mount Monadnock, landing at a predetermined location near LaValley at approximately 4:10 p.m. The crew then transported him to Elliot Hospital in Manchester for further medical evaluation.

Fish and Game reminds hikers that a Hike Safe Card helps support the state’s search-and-rescue operations. Information about the card is available at www.wildnh.com/safe, while additional hiking safety information and recommended gear can be found at hikesafe.com.
