KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Firefighters contained an early Sunday morning fire at a five-unit apartment building on Davis Street, limiting the primary damage to a third-floor room and preventing the flames from spreading to other parts of the structure.
The Keene Fire Department responded to 125 Davis St. shortly after 4:25 a.m. Sunday following a report of a room fire on the building’s third floor. While crews were still en route, dispatchers relayed information from Keene police officers already at the scene that flames were visible coming from windows at the rear of the building.
The report prompted fire officials to request additional personnel and equipment, bringing in mutual aid departments to assist with the response and provide coverage for Keene fire stations.
When the first fire units arrived at approximately 4:30 a.m., firefighters found an active fire on the third floor of the three-story, wood-frame apartment building. Crews immediately began suppression efforts while ambulance personnel searched the building for anyone who might be trapped inside.
Engine 2 firefighters deployed a hose line directly to the fire, while Ladder 2 personnel accessed the roof and cut a ventilation opening to release accumulated heat, smoke and gases. The operation was intended to improve conditions inside the building for both potential occupants and firefighters working to extinguish the fire.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control at approximately 5:05 a.m. A search of the building found no victims, and officials reported no injuries.
The fire’s primary impact, including fire, smoke and water damage, was confined to the room where it originated. Other areas of the third floor sustained secondary heat and smoke damage. The condition of apartments on the floors below had not yet been assessed when the department issued its report.
The building, owned by MGJ Realty LLC, is a five-unit residential property originally constructed in 1910. It encompasses approximately 7,099 square feet and has a wood-frame structure with multiple rooflines.
Following the initial suppression effort, firefighters continued working at the scene to check for hidden fire, remove damaged materials and protect the building and its contents from additional damage. Most responding units had returned to their stations by around 6:45 a.m., although the Fire Marshal’s Office remained on site.
The department placed preliminary building damage estimates between $75,000 and $100,000. Officials said that figure could change after a more thorough evaluation. No estimate was available for damage to personal belongings.
Seventeen Keene firefighters and approximately 20 mutual aid personnel were assigned to the incident. Departments and agencies assisting at the scene included Cheshire County Ambulance, Marlborough, Swanzey and Jaffrey fire departments, and Winchendon, Massachusetts, which provided a tower unit.
Additional personnel from Cheshire County Ambulance, Surry, Walpole, Swanzey and Bellows Falls provided station coverage while Keene crews were occupied with the fire.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Keene Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office. Anyone with questions about the investigation can contact the office at fire-marshal@keenenh.gov.
