KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – The City of Keene’s Public Works Department will begin its annual fall water main flushing program this weekend.
The program is meant to clean mineral deposits from the water mains and allows the city to exercise city water valves and hydrants, keeping them operational for firefighting, water main breaks, and other issues.
The program will begin this Sunday August 18th. Work will be done during the overnight hours, specifically from 10 pm to 6 am in an effort to minimize inconvenience in the form of discolored water and traffic delays. This first week of the program will wrap up Friday morning, August 23rd at 6 am.
For those who do experience discolored water, the department is advising customers to close all but one tap and run the cold water, with the aerator removed from the end of the faucet, for 10 minutes. If that doesn’t clear it up, try again in another 30 minutes.
If the discoloration stains your laundry the department says not to dry it and contact them for a special stain remover. The department can be reached at 603-352-6550.
A list of streets affected during this first week of the program is available on the city’s website, or listed below, and it includes some more heavily traveled areas such as Main, Court, and Washington Streets. The department notes that it is subject to change depending on weather and mechanical issues.
