NORTON, MA. (MyKeeneNow) – The Keene State College women’s soccer team hit the road for the first time in their 2024 campaign, as they traveled to take on Wheaton College (Mass.) on Saturday afternoon. After it looked like the game would finish scoreless after both goalkeepers had combined for 13 saves so far in the contest, Lily Brown was able to give Wheaton the 1-0 win and hand KSC their first loss of the season, after scoring with only 4:33 remaining in the contest.

How it Happened

KSC opened the match on the attack early, as the Owls took three shots in the opening six minutes, but Lyons’ goalkeeper, Patricia Bandrup, made a pair of saves and saw the third shot go wide of the target to keep the game scoreless early on. Over the next 16 minutes, both teams traded shots back and forth, as Bandrup made another save and KSC goalkeeper, Riley Andriski, made a pair of saves, as well. Through the final 25 minutes of the opening half, Wheaton outshot KSC, 4-2, as Bandrup made one more save, and Andriski denied two more shots from the Lyons to send the game scoreless into the half.

Wheaton came out hot in the second half, as they opened with four shots on goal, but Andriski continued to lock the Lyons down over the first 18 minutes of the second. While Andriski made four saves in net for the Owls, Bandrup continued to do her part for Wheaton, as she made one save across the same time span. After both teams continued to trade possessions through the rest of the half, each team got another shot attempt off, but both shots missed the target. With 4:33 remaining in the contest, Julia Sternat sent a corner kick into the Owls’ box, which found Lily Brown, who ripped a shot just under the crossbar and under Andriski’s hand, to give the Lyons a 1-0 lead with little time remaining. The Owls’ attack was unable to get a shot off in the final minutes, as Wheaton held on to the late 1-0 win over the Owls, to remain undefeated in 2024.
