KEENE, NH – A Springfield, Massachusetts man is facing charges after leading police on a chase in Roxbury Saturday night.
According to a news release, New Hampshire State Police Trooper Troy Couillard was on patrol around 9:00 Saturday night conducting stationary radar speed enforcement in Sullivan on Route 9 when he observed a vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed.
Couillard attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver, identified as Childlove Gelin, 31, refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated. Gelin reached speeds of nearly 90 miles per hour, accelerating away from Couillard.
Moments later Couillard came upon the vehicle after it crashed into a utility pole and sustained heavy damage. Two people were seen fleeing the crash site on foot. Numerous troopers, along with Keene Police arrived on scene and conducted a search for the two men.
Gelin’s passenger emerged from the woods during the search with minor injuries and was taken to Cheshire Medical Center for treatment. NHSP didn’t identify the passenger, elaborate on the nature of his injuries, or say if he was arrested as well.
Around 3:30 Sunday morning a trooper still on scene spotted Gelin walking on Route 9 near Granite Gorge and he was taken into custody. He was taken to Cheshire Medical as a precautionary measure due to exposure to the elements overnight. He was then discharged and transported to the Cheshire County House of Corrections where he remained without bail awaiting his arraignment.
Gelin was scheduled to be arraigned Monday on more than half a dozen charges, including Disobeying an Officer, Conduct After an Accident, Reckless Conduct, Criminal Mischief, Operating After Suspension, Speed, Open Container, and Fugitive from Justice. NHSP said additional charges are expected pending further investigation.
The section of Route 9 was closed for several hours and crews repaired the pole.
