CHARLESTOWN, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A nine-month-old child survived a suspected overdose in Charlesotwn after reportedly ingesting powdered drugs that a visitor allegedly dropped on the floor, police reported on Sunday.
The Charlestown Police Department has recommended charging Matthew Howard, 30, from Proctorsville, Vt., with aggravated assault and falsifying physical evidence in relation to the case, according to Lt. Jonathan Graham in a news release Sunday. Separately, Claremont police are pursuing charges against Howard for possession of fentanyl.
On Sept. 19, Claremont emergency services were called to the area of Main and Union Streets, where they found the child and the child’s mother en route to the hospital. First responders quickly administered Narcan, a medication that counteracts opioid effects, stabilizing the child before transport to Valley Regional Hospital, the release said. The child was later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and ultimately recovered.
The incident reportedly began while Howard was visiting his son—who was not involved in the incident—at Meadowview Apartments in Charlestown. According to police, Howard accidentally dropped a small bag of powdered drugs onto the floor, which went unnoticed until the child came across it. Howard later admitted to flushing the bag after discovering the overdose, police said.
The New Hampshire Division for Children, Youth and Families is also involved, and the Sullivan County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case to potentially present it to a grand jury.
