KEENE, NH – A man was injured Wednesday morning when he fell from the rock-climbing wall at the Keene Family YMCA.

According to the Southwestern New Hampshire Fire Mutual Aid log the call came in shortly after 9:30 Wednesday morning at the Keene Family YMCA facility on Summit Road. Scanner activity indicated that a man had fallen approximately 30 feet from the climbing wall.

The YMCA issued a statement Wednesday afternoon, confirming the incident, and said the individual, only identified as an adult male and a member of the Y, had completed training that allowed for the use of the wall without staff supervision.

The Y confirmed that the man was climbing on his own at the time of the incident and was following the protocols, which included wearing a harness, but he failed to clip into the auto-belay system, leaving nothing to catch him if he fell.

As a result of the incident, the Y will complete a review of their climbing wall protocols to ensure that this type of incident is mitigated as much as possible, given the inherent risk that comes with the activity. Until that review is completed, use of the auto-belay units will be suspended.

The individual was reportedly airlifted to a hospital for treatment. No further information regarding his condition has been released. In their statement the Y said their thoughts are with him, and they wish him a speedy recovery.
