KEENE, N.H.  (MyKeeneNow) A longtime late-winter fundraiser in Keene is getting a seasonal refresh this year, as the Cheshire Children’s Museum transforms its Shamrock Shuffle into the newly rebranded May Day 5K & Family Fest.

The updated event will take place this Sunday, May 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, marking a shift from its traditional March timing to a spring-themed celebration. Organizers say the change brings a brighter, more expansive atmosphere to what has been a staple community fundraiser for several years.

Like its predecessor, the event will feature a 5K run and walk, along with a one-mile fun run geared toward children. The race route remains unchanged, beginning at the museum’s location at 149 Emerald St. and following a familiar path along the Cheshire Rail Trail.

While the race itself will feel familiar to returning participants, the broader event has been reimagined as a May Day festival designed to draw families and community members beyond runners. The free Family Fest portion will include traditional May Day elements such as a maypole dance and Morris dancing, alongside entertainment, children’s activities, and vendor offerings.

Activities are expected to include a bounce house, martial arts demonstrations, storytelling, interactive art, and live performances. Organizers are also planning food vendors, raffle baskets featuring items from local businesses, and a prize for the best May Day-themed costume.

The museum will remain open during the event with regular admission.

Museum Executive Director Jocelyn Goldblatt said the rebrand reflects both the organization’s mission and the importance of its annual fundraiser.

“Our fundraisers are vital to fulfilling the museum’s mission of providing access to all Monadnock Region families,” Goldblatt said. “We’re excited to bring this new springtime version of our 5K and Family Fest to the community.”

Proceeds from the event will support the museum’s programming, including its “open doors” initiative, which provides free and discounted admission to ensure access for families across the region.

Participants can register in advance online, with same-day registration also available. Organizers are continuing to seek volunteers, sponsors, and vendors ahead of the event.

The fundraiser builds on the success of the former Shamrock Shuffle, which in past years drew runners and families for a March race and community day featuring crafts, vendors, and activities. By moving the event into May and expanding its offerings, organizers hope to grow participation and deepen community engagement.

Founded as a play-based learning space for children ages 1 to 10, the Cheshire Children’s Museum serves families throughout the Monadnock Region.
