MONADNOCK REGION, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Southern New Hampshire is facing an increased risk of wildfire spread today as a combination of dry air, gusty winds, and combustible ground cover creates hazardous conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say relative humidity levels are expected to drop significantly this afternoon, falling between 20 and 25 percent. At the same time, steady northwest winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour—with gusts reaching up to 30 mph—are likely to further dry out already brittle fuels such as grass, leaves, and twigs, making it easier for fires to ignite and spread quickly.
Conditions are expected to improve later this evening as wind gusts ease and humidity levels begin to rise, reducing the immediate threat.
Officials are urging residents to exercise caution, particularly when it comes to outdoor burning. Anyone considering open fires is advised to check with local fire authorities and follow all applicable regulations. Safety reminders include never leaving a fire unattended and ensuring campfires are fully extinguished before leaving the area.
