KEENE, N.H.  (MyKeeneNow) A longtime Keene High School science teacher known for her engaging classroom instruction and commitment to student success has been recognized as the school’s Outstanding Educator of the Year.

Monica Foley received the 2026 Outstanding Educator Award from the Keene High Alumni Fund, Inc., becoming the 27th educator to earn the distinction since the program was established.

The award traces its roots to members of the Keene High School Class of 1950, who sought a meaningful way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their graduation, according to a news release. Their discussions ultimately led to the creation of an annual award honoring educators who make a lasting impact on students and uphold high standards of excellence in education.

Established in 1998, the Keene High Alumni Fund annually recognizes an exceptional teacher or staff member at Keene High School, the release said. Recipients are selected through a nomination process that includes input from students, faculty, staff and support personnel. Along with the honor, winners receive an engraved crystal bowl and a monetary award.

Foley, who teaches science courses including Anatomy and Physiology, was praised by students and colleagues for creating a welcoming classroom atmosphere, inspiring curiosity and making complex subjects accessible through hands-on learning experiences.

Many nominations highlighted her patience, enthusiasm and willingness to provide extra support outside of class. Students described her as a teacher who believes in their abilities, encourages them through academic challenges and takes the time to ensure they understand difficult concepts.

Several students credited Foley with influencing their future career goals, including inspiring an interest in nursing and other health-related fields. Others noted her ability to make science engaging through laboratory activities and interactive lessons.

Nominators also pointed to Foley’s dedication beyond the classroom, describing her as a supportive coach and mentor who consistently encourages students to challenge themselves and grow both academically and personally.

Throughout the nomination process, students repeatedly emphasized Foley’s passion for teaching, her deep knowledge of science and her commitment to creating a positive learning environment where students feel valued and supported.

The Keene High Alumni Fund said the comments submitted on Foley’s behalf reflect the lasting impact she has had on generations of students and the spirit of excellence the award was created to recognize.

Foley was formally congratulated by the Alumni Fund as the 2026 Outstanding Educator of the Year.
