KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A winter overnight shelter for people experiencing homelessness is scheduled to return to Keene next month, with community partners preparing to begin operations Dec. 7 and continue through April 5, 2027, depending on available funding.
The temporary warming center will operate at the United Church of Christ, which has again offered its space for the effort, according to a news release. St. James Episcopal Church has also agreed to serve as an alternate location if circumstances require a backup site.
The shelter is being coordinated by the City of Keene, Hundred Nights Inc. and other community organizations. Hundred Nights is overseeing preparations, including staffing, planning and volunteer training.
The overnight facility will open at 9 p.m. each night, with a slightly later opening time of 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
People seeking shelter must contact Hundred Nights directly at (603) 352-5197 to complete the intake process.
The city is committing $50,000 toward this year’s operations, matching its contribution from last winter. The previous warming center operated from January through March, offering overnight accommodations during periods of cold weather.
City Manager Elizabeth A. Ferland said the experience demonstrated the value of cooperation among local organizations and faith communities.
“Last winter demonstrated what we can accomplish when organizations come together with a shared purpose,” Ferland said.
She expressed appreciation to the churches for providing shelter space and backup accommodations, as well as to Hundred Nights for coordinating the effort. Beginning operations earlier this season, she said, is intended to provide more consistent and predictable access to shelter throughout the winter.
Organizers are working toward a 120-day operating season, but additional donations from residents, businesses and community organizations will be necessary to maintain the program through its planned April 5 closing date.
Financial contributions can be made through the Hundred Nights website. Those interested in volunteering for hospitality-related positions can request more information by emailing volunteer@hundrednightsinc.org.
Hundred Nights Executive Director Becky Beaton said the organization is encouraged by the continued support of local partners.
“The cold winter months can be especially difficult for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, but with partners like the City of Keene, The United Church of Christ and St. James Episcopal Church, we know that a much-needed resource will once again be available this year,” Beaton said.
The warming shelter is intended to provide a safe, warm place for people without stable housing to stay overnight during the region’s coldest months.
