KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Keene motorists will encounter a variety of roadwork, paving projects and utility construction throughout the city this week as the Public Works Department continues its summer infrastructure schedule.

Several of the largest projects are expected to impact traffic through lane shifts, alternating one-way traffic and temporary parking restrictions. City officials are asking drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to use caution in work zones and allow extra travel time.

Work continues in Central Square, where Liberty Utilities is installing a new natural gas main along the west side of the square. Parking between Winter and West streets will remain unavailable during construction hours, and traffic patterns may be shifted around the work area. The project is expected to continue for approximately two weeks, with normal traffic restored at the end of each workday.

On Marlboro Street, reconstruction efforts will continue between Main Street and Eastern Avenue. Contractors will install new curbing and drainage structures, requiring alternating one-way traffic or temporary lane shifts during working hours.

Key Road will see two separate projects this week. On Monday, city contractor Park Construction is scheduled to pave the roadway while continuing installation of a box culvert between the Staples and Keene Cinema plazas. Drivers should expect alternating one-way traffic and restricted access within portions of the shopping center parking lots. While paving is expected to wrap up Monday, the culvert installation is projected to continue for about six weeks.

A separate project related to construction of the REVO Casino will take place Tuesday morning at 133 Key Road. Crews will install a new water service connection beginning at 6 a.m. Although traffic on Key Road is not expected to be affected, parking restrictions may be necessary within the Keene Cinema plaza while the work is completed. Water service is expected to be restored by late morning.

The George Street Bridge replacement project also moves forward Monday, with utility installation beginning on the west side of the bridge. George Street remains closed to through traffic, with detours in place throughout the estimated four-month construction period.

Additional roadway improvements are planned across the city this week. Harrison Street crews will continue installing curbs and sidewalks while maintaining alternating one-way traffic. On East Surry Road, paving operations are expected to last about three days beginning Monday, with alternating traffic through the work zone.

City highway crews also plan to pave sidewalks on Elm Street Monday and North Street Tuesday, weather permitting. Temporary sidewalk closures and occasional traffic shifts are expected during those projects.

On Wednesday, milling and paving is scheduled near 22 Drummer Road, where alternating one-way traffic will be in effect while crews complete the work.

Elsewhere, construction on the Transportation Heritage Trail will continue along Eastern Avenue with grading and gravel installation. Officials said the work is not expected to affect traffic.

Repairs continue at the City Hall parking garage throughout the week, including stair repairs, painting and installation of new lighting bases. City officials also announced the parking deck will close for one week beginning July 27 while crews install a protective membrane on the concrete surface. Although most work will occur overnight, the garage will remain closed during the daytime during that phase of construction.

Public Works crews will also conduct roadside mowing, tree trimming and brush clearing throughout Ward 3 as part of the city’s Week of Work program. Water and sewer crews will reset and replace curb stops at multiple Ward 3 locations, with temporary alternating traffic where necessary.

At the Public Works facility on Marlboro Street, contractors will repave the parking lot through the end of the week. Visitor parking has been temporarily relocated to the lot adjacent to Bartholomew Court, which will remain closed Monday through Wednesday with traffic detoured via the Keene Ice access road.

City officials remind residents to obey posted traffic controls, reduce speeds in work zones and use extra caution around construction crews. Most projects are expected to restore normal traffic patterns at the end of each workday.
