NORTHFIELD, MA (MyKeeneNow) A 65-year-old New Hampshire man died after a pickup truck crashed into a tree and caught fire last week in Northfield, according to authorities.
First responders were called to the area of 585 Gulf Road at about 12:30 p.m. on June 4 following a report of a single-vehicle crash. Investigators said a preliminary investigation found that the pickup truck was traveling southeast on Gulf Road when it left the roadway and struck a tree.
The vehicle subsequently caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.
The driver, believed to be Duane Schillemat, 65, of Munsonville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said he was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, along with members of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Northfield Police and Fire departments.
Officials said the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and formally confirm the identity of the deceased.
