JAFFREY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) As part of Jaffrey’s celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, The Park Theatre is planning to create a lasting record of life in 2026 by burying a community time capsule during its upcoming America 250 Cultural Fair.

The capsule will be placed on the theatre property near the River Street parking area during a public ceremony scheduled for 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. Organizers are encouraging residents to help shape its contents by submitting suggestions for items that represent contemporary life, local history, and the nation’s milestone anniversary.

Ideas may include photographs, newspaper clippings, audio recordings, historical memorabilia, letters, or other materials that could offer future generations a glimpse into life in the United States and the Monadnock Region during the country’s semi-quincentennial year.

“The story of America has always been told through the voices of its people,” said Steve Jackson, CEO of The Park Theatre. “This time capsule gives our community an opportunity to preserve those voices and leave an authentic record of who we are for future generations.”

The project is being coordinated in partnership with the Jaffrey Historical Society, which will assist in reviewing submissions and selecting items for inclusion. The historical society also plans to contribute materials of its own documenting the area’s heritage.

Time capsules have a long history of preserving snapshots of everyday life for future discovery. One of the earliest known American examples dates to 1795, when Samuel Adams and Paul Revere placed a brass container in the cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House. The capsule was rediscovered more than two centuries later and contained coins, newspapers, and other artifacts from the era.

Organizers have established a long-term plan for the Jaffrey capsule. Instructions engraved on the container will direct that it be opened for the first time on July 4, 2126, exactly 100 years after it is buried. At that time, its contents will be reviewed and additional items may be added before it is resealed. Future openings are planned every 50 years thereafter.

The time capsule ceremony is one of several activities planned during The Park Theatre’s America 250 Cultural Fair, which will run July 2-4. The three-day event will feature films, exhibits, live entertainment including a Fred Marple variety show, a cookout, and other activities celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday.

Suggestions can be submitted by email to timecapsule250@theparktheatre.org and must be received by noon on June 29. Residents may also pick up submission forms at The Park Theatre’s lobby and box office during regular operating hours.

The Park Theatre is located at 19 Main St. in Jaffrey. Additional information about the festival and ticketed events is available through the theatre’s box office at 532-8888.
