KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Several businesses at 82 Main St. in downtown Keene are expected to remain closed until at least next Tuesday after a sprinkler malfunction flooded the building’s electrical room and forced a building-wide power shutdown earlier this week.
The closure impacts multiple businesses in the complex, including Local Burger, Kilkenny Pub, The Perch, Madame Sherri’s, Red House Irons and other establishments housed in the building.
Patrick Brown, co-owner of Madame Sherri’s, said crews are currently relying on a generator to keep one freezer and one cooler operating at the restaurant, while another freezer was relocated to Brown Computer Solutions.
Brown said much of the restaurant’s fresh food inventory will likely be lost because of the extended outage.
“We are preparing to throw out a lot of our fresh food,” Brown said Thursday afternoon. “Today I will be throwing away salmon and haddock.”
According to the Keene Fire Department, firefighters responded around 5:30 p.m.last night after a sprinkler head discharged inside the building’s electrical room. Fire officials previously said the most likely cause was a mechanical failure of the sprinkler head.
The sprinkler sprayed water onto the building’s main electrical panels, which distribute power to all of the businesses in the complex. Because the electrical equipment was saturated, Eversource shut off power to the building while electricians, restoration crews and fire officials assessed the damage.
Brown previously described the situation as chaotic as businesses scrambled to save food and inventory before refrigeration systems failed.
Madame Sherri’s moved some inventory to the nearby Monadnock Food Co-op, while other businesses relocated food supplies to off-site storage locations.
Social media posts from Local Burger and Kilkenny Pub confirmed both businesses remain closed while repairs continue.
Business owners said cleanup and restoration work has continued since Tuesday night, with insurance claims expected as businesses deal with spoiled inventory, lost revenue and water damage.
