KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A Swanzey man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges stemming from a 2024 incident that led to an hours-long police standoff and the evacuation of nearby residents.

Ian MacNeil, 38, appeared Tuesday in Cheshire County Superior Court, where he pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly conduct and one count of resisting arrest, both misdemeanors. The original felony charge of criminal threatening with a deadly weapon was not among the convictions.

On the disorderly conduct conviction, MacNeil was sentenced to 12 months in the Cheshire County House of Corrections, with credit for time served if the sentence is imposed. The jail term was deferred for one year, with the possibility of a further deferment.

On the resisting arrest conviction, he received a second 12-month House of Corrections sentence, which was suspended for five years on the condition that he remain of good behavior and comply with the terms of the court’s order. As part of his sentence, MacNeil is also required to remain in mental health treatment and counseling if recommended by his treatment providers.

The charges stemmed from an incident that began late on Sept. 11, 2024, when Swanzey police responded to a reported noise complaint at a multi-family home on South Road.

According to authorities, officers encountered MacNeil outside the residence, where he allegedly pointed a firearm at one of the responding officers. Police withdrew from the area and requested assistance as MacNeil barricaded himself inside the apartment.

The standoff lasted nearly 15 hours and prompted the closure of a section of South Road, the evacuation of nearby homes and the temporary sheltering of residents at Whitcomb Hall. Police and State Police negotiators repeatedly urged MacNeil to surrender before a New Hampshire State Police K9 team took him into custody shortly after 1 p.m. on Sept. 12.

MacNeil sustained minor injuries during the arrest and was transported to Cheshire Medical Center for evaluation.

The response involved the Swanzey Police Department, New Hampshire State Police, the Cheshire County Sheriff’s Office, Cheshire County EMS and the Swanzey Fire Department, with State Police also deploying an armored vehicle to the scene.

No officers or members of the public were seriously injured during the incident.
