NELSON, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A two-alarm fire destroyed a home on Log Cabin Road Friday afternoon, displacing its occupants and drawing firefighters from more than a dozen departments across the Monadnock Region.
Emergency crews were dispatched to 73 Log Cabin Road between at about 2:15 p.m.
Residents Geoffrey Williams and Melanie Barthel were not home at the time according to Nelson Fire Chief Joseph Sarsioni. Sarsioni said there was only one occupant in the two-story residence when the fire broke out, who was determined to be Barthel’s stepson. He was upstairs when he heard a loud bang and went downstairs to investigate. Upon reaching the kitchen, he discovered smoke and exited the building to call 911. Sarsioni said the fire had originated in the basement.
The fire intensified rapidly, with flames and smoke eventually venting through skylights in the roof. The blaze was visible from Route 9, prompting Sarsioni to request a second alarm while en route to the scene.
The second-alarm response brought personnel and apparatus from across the region, including the Professional Firefighters of Keene, Antrim Fire & Ambulance, Stoddard Fire & Rescue, Harrisville Fire & Rescue, Dublin Fire Department, Sullivan Fire and Rescue, Hancock Fire Department, Surry Volunteer Fire Department, Gilsum Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Marlborough Fire Department and the Harrisville Police Department.
A family dog escaped the home and sustained minor burns, Sarsioni said.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control between 5:30 and 6 p.m.
The home sustained catastrophic damage and was declared a total loss. Sarsioni said the structure’s interior was destroyed, leaving Williams and Barthel displaced.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene Friday afternoon and is continuing to examine the origin and cause of the blaze.
A community fundraising effort has been launched to assist Williams and Barthel with immediate expenses following the loss of their home and belongings. Visit GoFundMe for more information.
