PUTNEY, VT (MyKeeneNow) A 23-year-old man from Alstead is facing serious criminal charges after police say his vehicle veered off Main Street in Putney Thursday morning, striking two pedestrians and leaving one critically injured.

Jason A. Ball was arrested at the scene after Vermont State Police responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls around 11 a.m. Authorities say Ball was behind the wheel when his car left the roadway and hit the victims, who were walking along the sidewalk. According to investigators, Ball showed signs of drug impairment and was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and grossly negligent operation.

One victim, a 77-year-old Putney resident, suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. The second pedestrian sustained less serious injuries. Police are withholding the identity of the victims pending family notification.

Following his arrest, Ball was processed at the Westminster State Police barracks and later lodged at the Southern State Correctional Facility on $25,000 bail. He was scheduled to appear today in Windham County Superior Court to face formal charges, including DUI with serious bodily injury or death resulting and gross negligent operation.

State police continue to investigate the incident.

The pedestrian who was struck and facing life threatening injuries has been identified as Diane E. Clementine, 77, of Putney The pedestrian who received minor injuries has been identified as Deborah Bozetarnik, 68, also of Putney.
