RINDGE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Franklin Pierce University has received a $960,000 grant from the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) to upgrade its aging wastewater treatment system, a project aimed at meeting new environmental standards and supporting the university’s expanding role in regional workforce development.

The funding, part of NBRC’s Spring 2025 Catalyst Program, was one of more than 60 grants awarded across northern New England and New York. It was the only project funded in Cheshire County this cycle. The total cost of the Franklin Pierce upgrade is estimated at $1.2 million, with the university covering the remaining $240,000.

Built in 1965 and last upgraded in 2008, the campus wastewater system serves approximately 1,300 people. Planned improvements include the construction of a third Rapid Infiltration Basin (RIB), which will expand capacity and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

University officials say the project is essential not only for campus operations but also for supporting health care program expansion and workforce initiatives that benefit Cheshire and Sullivan counties.

Federal lawmakers hailed the NBRC grants as smart investments in rural infrastructure, economic growth, and public services. In addition to the Rindge award, the town of Newport also received funding to improve its municipal water distribution system.
