BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) Brattleboro police say a Vermont man is facing charges after allegedly chasing children through a neighborhood while carrying a machete Sunday evening.

According to police, officers were called to Maple Street around 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 31 after multiple reports of a man threatening residents and pursuing several juveniles. Investigators said three children, all under the age of 16, were followed through several neighborhood streets by a man later identified as 36-year-old Adam J. Kniffin of Sharon, Vt.

Witnesses told police that Kniffin had a machete in a sheath on his belt and at one point displayed it while trailing the juveniles. The children eventually sought safety inside a nearby home, and police were called.

Officers located Kniffin a short time later on Canal Street. Although he no longer had the weapon on him, police found the machete hidden in nearby bushes.

Kniffin was taken into custody without further incident and charged with aggravated stalking. He was booked at the Brattleboro Police Department and held on $1,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
