MONADNOCK REGION, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — A winter storm moving through New Hampshire Monday morning has left thousands of residents without electricity statewide, including customers in the Monadnock Region, as rain and ice create hazardous conditions.
As of 11:30 a.m., more than 11,000 customers statewide were reported without power. Cheshire County remains under a Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service until 7 p.m. Monday, with mixed precipitation expected to continue impacting travel and utility service. Several other counties to the north and east are under a Winter Storm Warning.
State emergency officials say utility crews are actively responding to outages, including in towns like Peterborough, where icy conditions have contributed to downed lines and power disruptions.
Robert Buxton, director of the New Hampshire Department of Safety’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, urged residents to prioritize safety if they lose power.
“If you lose power, keep you and your family safe,” Buxton said, stressing that generators should never be run indoors and that people should stay well clear of downed power lines and call 911 if they encounter them. He also asked drivers in Cheshire County and elsewhere to slow down and give utility crews space to work.
Residents are encouraged to report outages directly to their utility providers and to re-report every 24 hours until service is restored. Safety officials also recommend using flashlights instead of candles, treating dark traffic signals as four-way stops, and staying informed through NH Alerts and weather updates.
