WINCHESTER, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A Winchester man arrested in 2024 following an investigation into online sexual exploitation of a minor was sentenced Tuesday in Cheshire County Superior Court for possession of child sexual abuse material.

Travus S. Barnes, 47, was sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in New Hampshire State Prison, with a minimum term of five years. The court credited Barnes with 546 days of pretrial confinement, which will be applied toward his minimum sentence.

Additionally, Barnes was sentenced to one year in the Cheshire County House of Corrections on a misdemeanor sexual assault conviction, along with probation and supervision conditions, to be served concurrently.

The court imposed several state prison sentences that were fully suspended, to be enforced only if Barnes violates court-ordered conditions.

Those include a 15-year state prison sentence, with a minimum term of 7.5 years, fully suspended for 15 years from Tuesday, conditioned on good behavior and compliance with probation and treatment requirements.

Barnes also received a seven-year suspended state prison sentence for failure to register as a sex offender, suspended for 10 years, and a seven-year sentence for certain uses of a computer, with a minimum term of 3.5 years, which was suspended for the remainder of his lifetime.

As part of the sentencing, the court ordered Barnes to participate in and complete sexual offender treatment, counseling, and any educational or rehabilitative programming as directed by the Department of Corrections or probation officials. He is also subject to strict no-contact orders and ongoing probation supervision.

Any violation of probation or the terms of the suspended sentences could result in significant additional prison time, according to court records.

Barnes was arrested in August 2024 following an investigation by the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, which alleged he used Snapchat to engage in sexually explicit communication with a minor under the age of 16. Barnes is a registered sex offender with a prior sexual assault conviction from 2014.
