KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Traffic impacts are continuing across parts of the city this week as construction progresses on both Island Street and the George Street Bridge, with some changes to detours and work zones.
On Island Street, crews with SUR Construction West, Inc. are entering the next phase of a multi-week sidewalk installation project that began earlier this month. Starting Tuesday at 8 a.m., work will shift to the intersection of Island and West streets, where crews will begin pouring concrete sidewalks.
During active construction hours, Island Street at West Street will be closed to through traffic, with a posted detour directing drivers to Pearl Street. As with earlier phases, traffic is expected to return to normal patterns at the end of each workday. The sidewalk project is anticipated to take about five weeks to complete.
The work is part of ongoing improvements tied to the larger Upper Winchester Street reconstruction effort, which has included utility upgrades, roadway work, and the replacement of the Island Street Bridge.
Meanwhile, work continues on the George Street Bridge replacement project, where George Street remains closed as crews install water drainage infrastructure near 44 George St. Officials say the closure is expected to remain in place through April 25, though traffic will reopen at the end of each business day.
Drivers and pedestrians are being advised to plan ahead, follow posted detours, and use caution in active construction zones. Additional updates are expected as both projects move forward.
