JAFFREY, N.H.(MyKeeneNow) Two men suffered serious injuries Thursday after a small aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Jaffrey Airfield–Silver Ranch, according to local authorities.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the airport on Turnpike Road shortly before noon after reports that an airplane had overturned alongside the runway. When first responders arrived, they found the aircraft upside down with two occupants trapped inside.
Firefighters and rescue personnel worked to extricate the men, both adult residents of New York. Police said the pilot and passenger sustained significant injuries to their heads and torsos but remained conscious and responsive following the crash.
After being stabilized at the scene, the men were transported by separate medical helicopters to UMass Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
The aircraft involved was identified as an RV-7A single-engine experimental airplane registered in New York. Preliminary findings indicate the plane was in the process of landing when the crash occurred. Investigators have not determined an official cause, although Jaffrey Police Chief Christopher LaBrecque said strong winds may have played a role.
The damaged aircraft came to rest on the side of the runway and remained visible as emergency crews worked at the scene Thursday afternoon.
Authorities have not released the identities of the pilot or passenger as efforts to notify family members were still underway.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will oversee the investigation into the crash. Officials said any further information regarding the cause of the accident will come from federal investigators.
Multiple agencies responded to the emergency, including the Jaffrey Fire Department, Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance, Peterborough Fire and Rescue, Peterborough Ambulance, Boston MedFlight, and **UMass Memorial Life Flight>, along with airport personnel.
